Safeguarding Vital Services for the Community During Budget Cuts
Many agencies have experienced budget cuts from government funding at the state and local level, half of our affiliate agencies expect a drop in funding. At the same time, agencies are reporting that the need for their services has increased. We know that some safety net services are in demand because of economic conditions. This year, we gave grants to fill the funding gaps for vital programs such as those serving disadvantaged youth and victims of domestic violence. We distributed 30 grants to agencies serving all the Asian ethnic groups throughout the Bay Area.
No single grant could fully offset the cuts in public support which are far deeper than most agencies have ever seen. Still, the Asian Pacific Fund hoped to cushion the fall and help draw public attention to the importance of these vital community services.
Grant Recipients:
Asian Americans for Community Involvement to support the Domestic Violence Program and Asian Women's Home and offset loss of state funding. $15,000 matching grant
Asian Health Services to support primary health care services and offset loss of state funding.$15,000 matching grant
Asian Law Caucus for core support of legal services and to offset loss of county and foundation funding.$15,000 matching grant
Asian Women's Shelter for core support of the shelter program and to offset loss of state funding. $15,000 matching grant
Cambodian Community Development to support core operating costs and offset loss of foundation funding. $20,000
Community Health for Asian Americans to support capacity building with partner organizations. $10,000
Community Youth Center to support the Clubhouse-to-College/Career program and offset loss of county funding. $20,000
Korean Community Center East Bay to support fund development planning and activities. $12,000
Narika to support fund development activities that will support programs for victims of domestic violence. $10,000
Oakland Asian Student Education Services to support mentoring and tutoring services for low-income youth which leverages volunteer services and to offset loss of city funding. $13,000
Veterans Equity Center for core support of services to Filipino veterans of World War II. $10,000
Vietnamese Youth Development Center to support a youth employment program and to offset loss of county funding. $20,000
Census 2010:
Asian Pacific Fund--to meet the request of an anonymous donor--became the largest supporter of Asian outreach in the Bay Area for Census 2010, awarding $200,000 in grants to 18 organizations. Outreach covered communities that are often overlooked and therefore excluded from census count, such as the Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Pakistani, Samoan and Vietnamese communities.

The Asian Pacific Fund monitors the urgent and emerging needs of Asian Americans in the Bay Area. This allows us to build close ties with community groups and to select a priority area each year where our grants will have a positive, lasting impact.
