Banatao Scholars, Class of 2002

Hans graduated from American High School in Fremont, California. Born in Manila, Philippines, he immigrated to the United States when he was in the 2nd grade and lived in Canada before moving to Fremont. While in high school, Hans was involved in many activities serving the community, such as volunteering at Ardenwood Elementary School and at the Fremont Arts & Wine Festival, serving as the recycling commissioner with the E.C.O. club and traveling to Tijuana, Mexico with the Westwood Mexico Service Project to aid in constructing a village church. Academically Hans ranked 2nd in his graduating class, while taking challenging AP & Honors coursework. He also participated in the Menlough Achievement Program & Menlough Institute of Software Technology, which allowed him to better understand the engineering profession through mentors working in the field. Hans is a first-year student at the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Bioengineering.

Christine graduated from Lowell High School in San Francisco, California. In addition to a challenging academic course load, she was a defensive specialist on the varsity volleyball team, served as a California Scholarship Federation tutor in Mathematics, received high honors in the Golden State Examinations, and also found time to travel to Japan through the Youth for Understanding Japan America Friendship scholarship. Having helped raise a younger brother with Down's syndrome, Christine is passionate about pursuing a career as a genetic researcher to help families like hers understand genetic disorders. Christine is currently attending the University of California, San Diego, majoring in Cell Biology.
