HOME > SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS > BANATAO FAMILY EDUCATION FUND Banatao Scholars, Class of 2003Rita Jo Rose Encarnacion is a graduating senior at Carondelet High School in Concord, California. Rita was the captain of her varsity cheerleading squad and, as a three-year participant in her school choir, she had the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City at the Saltzburg International Music Festival. She has also sung with the choir of her church, St. Agnes Parish. Since childhood, Rita has aspired to become a civil engineer and she hopes to follow her undergraduate major in civil engineering at UC Berkeley with graduate studies. In addition, she has parlayed performance into a forum for sharing her Filipino culture: she has participated in the Kayumanggi Cultural Dance Troupe, which features Filipino folk dances, for the past eleven years. Rita is also committed to her community; not only has she volunteered at the district office of Senator Tom Torlekson, but she has also worked with autistic children at the Shadelands School. Craig Rainier Gadduang is a graduating senior and a class valedictorian at El Camino High School in South San Francisco, California. He plans to double-major in Engineering and Business at Stanford University and then plans to pursue graduate studies. He aspires to be a Chief Executive Officer of a major engineering company someday. His interest in science dates back to his childhood experiences. He had always shown a special interest in animals, natural phenomena, and his surrounding environments. As he grew older, he participated in, and won, science fairs, challenged himself with difficult science courses, and parlayed his interest in science into consistently exceptional grades throughout his educational career. He cites his hard-working mother as his hero and states that his Filipino American heritage is a driving force in his goals to succeed in life. Mark Llorente is a graduating senior at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco, California. He plans to major in Physics and Teaching at UC Berkeley. An eclectic course of study, including world religions, morality and social justice, biology, psychology and chemistry, greatly expanded his understanding of the nature of the universe and of life itself. Physics, in particular, has been a life-long motivation and hobby for Mark, inherent to his entire being. Mark also loves building, in every sense of the word, from personal relationships to physical structures to public communities. Since civil engineering combines all of his interests, passions, and intentions, he aspires to work in an engineering firm and then, after a number of years, intends to go into teaching so that he can teach others the joys of physics. Mark feels a deep gratitude to his family for their constant support and also intends to continue his commitment to social justice work as he moves forward in his goals. Robert Racadio is a graduating senior at Tokay High School in Lodi, California. He plans to major in chemistry at the University of Chicago and hopes to pursue a master's degree in that field, perhaps serving as a college professor someday. He also aspires to work for a big-name chemical company, such as DuPont, or work in a medical laboratory. His always-questioning mind and innate curiosity during childhood opened him up early to the vast possibilities inherent in science. Thus, Robert has always been in love with science, as it has served to both dispel mysteries of the world, and add intrigue to it, for him. Through extensive reading and his involvement in science competitions, especially the Science Olympiad, Robert was able to deeply explore the science field on various fronts. The trust and unconditional support of his family continues to motivate him, as do the Filipino values and heritage that are becoming increasingly important to him. |
