Banatao Scholars, Class of 2004

Rajiv Paul L. Ayyangar graduated from Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton who will be attending Princeton University in the fall as a nanotechnology with biotechnology major. He was a Governor's Scholar for three years and a recipient of the Harvard University Book Award in 2003. In addition to his academic achievements, he has a passion for classical and jazz piano and can solve a Rubik's cube in less than 60 seconds.

Jarrett A. Bato graduated North Salinas High School in Salinas and plans to major in mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley in the fall. Born in Saudi Arabia, he moved to California when he was 13 years old. He was the captain of his high school football team and active on the track & field team for four years. His current interests are in alternative fuel sources and research on hydrogen engines.

Nicholas A. de Ocampo is a sophomore Computer Science and Engineering major at UCLA. Nicholas got involved in his residence hall government, serving as the controller for his floor. He also joined UCLA Samahang Pilipino as a recruitment coordinator and a participant in the culture night performance. Next year, he will serve as a peer advisor for the SPACE (Samahang Pilipino Advancing Community Empowerment) program. In high school, he held various leadership roles on campus and ran on the cross country and track teams. Nicholas graduated as a valedictorian from Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo.

Nicole A. Esclamado is a sophomore at Harvey Mudd College, where she plans to major in Physics or Engineering. During her first year in college, she joined a design team with other freshmen where they successfully engineered a digital wound monitoring device for the Department of Physical Therapy at the Pomona Valley Hospital and Medical Center. She was also named Rookie of the Year for her CMS Athenas Women's Soccer team. During high school, she achieved high honors in academics as well as on the soccer team. Nicole graduated as a valedictorian from Justin-Siena High School in Napa.

Adrian K. Fontanilla graduated Merrill F. West High School in Tracy and will be attending UC San Diego where he plans to major in engineering/applied math. Adrian was active in the Space and Engineering Academy, CSF Club, and Key Club. He also worked as an HR Assistant at the Sutter Tracy Community Hospital.

Janice S. Javier graduated as a valedictorian from St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School in Vallejo. She will attend UC Berkeley in the fall and plans major in Biochemistry and minor in Dance. She served as president of the Student Council and the National Honor Society at her school. She is very involved in dance and was a principal in the Benicia Ballet as well as a choreographer for her school's spring musical.

Michelle T. Lapus graduated as a Top Ten scholar from Sheldon High School in Sacramento. As a Regents Scholar, she will attend UC Davis in the fall, majoring in biotechnology. As a member of her school's Biotech Academy, Michelle chaired their annual blood drive. She has also been involved in various community service programs through her school, including UNICEF, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and the Salvation Army.
