Banatao Scholars, Class of 2005

Jevell Angelo F. Acebedo (San Francisco), Jefferson High School, plans to major in Aeronautical Engineering at UC Davis. Born in the Philippines, he lived in Ithaca, NY, before moving to San Francisco during his junior high school years. Jevell is passionate about music and has been involved in his school marching band as well as a field-show marching band called the Blue Devils for several years.

Stephanie Christina Berry (Sacramento), Mira Loma High School, will major in Civil Engineering, Building Science at University of Southern California. She has been active in the Student Organization for Cultural Awareness and was a youth representative for the Arcade Creek Neighborhood Association. Stephanie received the San Juan Unified School District Award for Sustained Academic Excellence this year. In her free time, she plays basketball and goes snowboarding.

Jason Arnold Villanueva Cuenco (Bay Point), Mount Diablo High School, will attend UC Berkeley as an Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences major. He is the founder and president of his high school Technology Student Guild and is also involved in the Multicultural Club and Key Club. Jason has been recognized for academic excellence in multiple subjects. While his main interests are in science and technology, he also enjoys aikido and swimming.

Sarah C. Kabiling (San Jose), valedictorian at Mount Pleasant High School, will attend UC Berkeley as a Mechanical Engineering major. She is also working on receiving her Piano Diploma from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in England and is a dance performer for the school Kasama Club and a teacher's assistant for the North Valley Christian Fellowship Sunday School.

Benjamin Greene Kilat (Rohnert Park), valedictorian at Cardinal Newman High School, will attend UCLA as a Computer Science and Engineering major. Part of his interest in math is shown in his love for puzzles and mazes. Benjamin also found a new interest in tennis and has been on his high school varsity team for three years. In his free time, he enjoys wakeboarding, bowling, and video games.

Joanna Marie Rabano (San Jose), James Lick High School, will attend University of Southern California as an Electrical Engineering major. She is on the high school cross-country and track and field teams, and she sings in the St. John Vianney's Revelation Choir. Her passions include music and art, especially painting.

Alexander Cortez Tan II (Union City), James Logan High School, will attend Stanford University as an Engineering major. Born in the Philippines, he moved at age 11 from Cebu City to the United States. He has been involved in forensics throughout high school and was awarded the title of Forensics State Champion for Duo Interpretation this year. Alexander earned a black belt in taekwondo and now teaches martial arts as an assistant instructor. He is also a Boy Scout and earned his Eagle Scout rank.
