Banatao Scholars, Class of 2007

Douglas E. Albert (San Francisco), Lowell High School, will study Electrical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He intends to continue his strong focus on science, while also taking a broad interdisciplinary approach to become a sort of modern day Renaissance Man. Douglas has been self-employed as a systems consultant for the past six years, mostly doing pro bono work for non-profit organizations. He enjoys playing the trumpet and euphonium.

Ashley K. Cabico (Torrance), West High School, plans to major in aerospace engineering while pursuing a minor in music at the University of Southern California. Her interests range from playing on the soccer team at school and performing as an accomplished soloist on the bassoon with the local youth orchestra. She learned the importance of giving back to the community from her grandfather, and has spent time volunteering at both an aquarium near home and with churches in several other states. In her free time Ashley enjoys reading, watching her favorite shows House and Numb3rs, and going to the movies with friends.

Regine M. Labog (Tarzana), Louisville High School, plans to major in Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. She enjoys Robotics as a hobby and likes planning events for her Math Club. Regine was admitted into the WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) Program at Cal and is planning to join a Pilipino club on campus. She won the 2007 Bank of America Achievement Award in a Foreign Language (French) and intends to study Mandarin, Korean and Japanese in the future.

Ian L. Legaspi (Quartz Hill), Quartz Hill High School, will attend UCLA where he will pursue Civil Engineering. During his senior year, he was involved in many activities including varsity football, National Honor Society, and Asian-Pacific Club. At the end of the school year he was one of many Valedictorians (4.661 GPA) in a senior class of more than 800 students. This summer he will continue working as a science and math tutor at a company called Math Magicians. He will also have a second job as a student assistant at the California State Prison.

Rex Ryan N. Magadia (Stockton), Lincoln High School, plans to study Engineering or Biochemistry at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. Ryan was on his high school’s water polo, basketball and wrestling teams, and was in Link Crew for a year. Ryan is a member of the California Scholarship Federation and of The National Society of High School Scholars.

Stephanie A. Makalintal (West Covina), Bishop Amat High School, intends to study Biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her overall goal is to perform scientific research in order to expand her hands-on ability and to gain the proper experience for a future career in medical research. Stephanie was an active member of her high school’s Barkada Club and Key Club. She received the Bank of America Plaque for achievements in the fields of Science and Math and an Academic Excellence Award.

Ryan M. Manalo (Arleta), Bishop Alemany High School, will study Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He wants to become a chemical engineer to find cures for diseases or develop alternative fuels to benefit countries that are rapidly industrializing. To broaden his horizons in high school, Ryan joined the National Honor Society, Key Club and Academic Decathlon. His interests and hobbies include exercising, maintaining his ant farm, dancing, reading and watching movies.

Elma Joy R. Trinidad (Chula Vista), Otay Ranch High School, plans to major in Mechanical Aerospace Engineering and minor in Economics at the University of California, San Diego. She served in her high school’s student body as president in 2006-2007 and secretary from 2003 to 2005. Elma Joy has been a Church of Christ Choir member for 11 years. She enjoys photography and lomography, floral design and event planning and coordination for their family business.
