The Asian Pacific Fund Honorees

Each year the Asian Pacific Fund honors exceptional individuals for their professional accomplishments, leadership and philanthropic contributions. Our honorees' personal stories about how they achieved success and why they choose to give back inspire all of us.

Honorees are formally recognized at an annual gala attended by more than 300 corporate, civic and community leaders.

See the Photo Gallery for images from previous galas.

For several years now, the gala has included special presentations on our honorees' life stories and accomplishments, offering intimate portraits of our honored guests. The texts from these presentations are available by clicking on the link below each short biography.

Note: Bios appear as presented at the time the honoree was recognized and may not be current.

2007

Chieu Le
President & Chief Executive Officer, Lee's Sandwiches

Chieu Le built a company out of one catering truck and successfully transformed a small business into a thriving enterprise. Through hard work and perseverance, Chieu created a nationally-recognized chain with a sterling reputation.

Lee’s Sandwiches is the result of years overcoming business obstacles and personal tragedies. After fleeing Vietnam to start over in the U.S., Chieu worked long hours for someone else making burritos and tacos. Over time, one truck grew into an entire fleet, and one store became 34 sandwich shops in four states.

Chieu credits his family, especially his son Minh, for the company’s expansion and success. Minh saw potential in Lee’s Sandwiches to be a chain of restaurants that served American and Vietnamese food everyone could enjoy.

Chieu and his family give back by becoming lead donors in creating the first community college facility in the Little Saigon of Los Angeles, and by supporting the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 tsunami that devastated coastal communities in South and Southeast Asia. They support schools in Vietnam, and participate in other charitable projects around the globe.

2006

Dr. Rolland C. Lowe
Community Leader
Former President, California Medical Association

Rolland C. Lowe was the first Asian American president of the California Medical Association. In addition to seeing patients in his Chinatown office, Dr. Lowe worked to involve physicians in their communities so they can better advocate for the poor, elderly and other patients. Dr. Lowe helped provide Chinese people with quality health care and doctors who speak their language and understand their culture. Dr. Lowe was instrumental in creating a network of ethnic physician groups to better organize the voices of California’s diverse communities. He also helped form the first national policy and research organization for Asian health needs.

Dr. Lowe is not only involved in health issues but also supports the preservation of Chinese American history and protection of civil rights for Asians. A graduate of UC Berkeley and the UCSF School of Medicine, Dr. Lowe serves on numerous boards, and was a trustee at the San Francisco Foundation and the Council on Foundations. Dr. Lowe and his wife Kathy are long-time supporters of the Asian Pacific Fund. He was recognized by the White House in 1999 for his community work, and he received the Champion of Health Professions Diversity Award from the California Wellness Foundation earlier this year.
