Chang-Lin Tien Education Leadership AwardsGeneral Information The Chang-Lin Tien Education Leadership Awards annually honors two Asian Americans with significant academic accomplishments and the potential to advance to the highest leadership levels in higher education. The purpose of the awards is to support the recognition, professional development and advancement of Asian Americans as leaders of colleges and universities. Each award recipient receives an unrestricted grant of $10,000. The Asian Pacific Fund also sponsors a recognition program to publicize the work of the award recipient. This award honors the legacy of Chang-Lin Tien, the first Asian American to head a major U.S. research university as chancellor of UC Berkeley from 1990 to 1997. New recipients of the award were announced on January 9, 2009 click here

Purpose This award was created to inspire more Asian Americans to aspire to the leadership exemplified by Dr. Tien. Quality institutions of higher education are essential to our nation’s future, and the U.S. economy is increasingly intertwined with the economies of Asian nations. Asian American leaders of higher education, like Dr. Tien, bring a commitment to the excellence and many unique talents needed, as well as an ability to make the vital connections we need with Asia. Institutions of higher education, particularly the public universities and colleges in the United States, would greatly benefit from leaders who exemplify the qualities of Dr. Tien and come close to his level of accomplishment. Asian Americans are currently underrepresented at this level of academic leadership, and we believe this award will help focus attention on individuals who may be able to serve in these positions.
About the Award Sponsor The Asian Pacific Fund is a community foundation established to improve the health and well-being of all Asian Americans in the Bay Area. By providing services and awarding grants to more than 90 Asian organizations, the Fund supports a broad range of local groups that provide vital services to a diversity of Asian Americans. The Fund is the only organization in the Bay Area focused exclusively on working closely with Asian donors, raising funds for community agencies and public education projects, and ensuring that contributions have a lasting impact. Dr. Tien was a founding member of its Board of Directors.
