Demographic Profile of Bay Area Asians
Based on data released from Census 2000, the inaugural Asian Outlook report offers a first look at the state of Asian Americans in the Bay Area, providing previously unavailable analysis that combines socioeconomic factors with geography and specific Asian ethnic groups.
Key findings include:
- The number of Asians in the Bay Area is larger than previously reported, representing 23 percent of the total Bay Area population.
- The numbers of Asian children and elderly have increased 57 percent to 197 percent faster than the general population.
- Between 30 and 54.5 percent of Vietnamese, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Laotians and Cambodians live in poverty.
- Asian unemployment in California doubled in the past seven years
