Christine Hoang and Paul Nakada - Christine and Paul seem like a familiar Bay Area couple. He works in the software industry as a developer. She gave up the corporate lawyer’s life to do volunteer legal work in the Asian Pacific immigrant community and to focus on raising their young children. They may seem ordinary, but Christine and Paul make a dynamic pair committed to philanthropy both in principle and action.
“It is important to participate in the community so that you never lose your sense of where you came from, where your children came from,” said Christine. “When our children hear us talk about giving back, and see us volunteering and participating in community activities, they absorb those lessons and, hopefully, will carry them forward in life.”
Christine and Paul give to many organizations and make annual donations to their alma maters. They previously worked with a large for-profit company that offered donor advised fund management services, but eventually switched to the Asian Pacific Fund because they wanted more personalized service and an organization that was closer to the Asian community. They also wanted to leverage their resources and believed that a community-based fund would maximize the impact of their charitable giving.
Christine and Paul make it a priority to volunteer for charities they trust and believe in. Their donor advised fund allows them to support the causes they care about with minimum fuss. Christine and Paul like funding programs that tackle problems, both big and small, where they have a personal connection or are directly involved. Through the Asian Pacific Fund, the couple has given to international health organizations and agencies that provide much-needed legal expertise, among others.
