How Your Gift is Used

The Asian Pacific Fund offers many options to help others while fulfilling each donor’s personal goals and priorities. Several giving options are described in this section and each offers tax benefits. Some options affect the use of the funds while others are more an expression of the donor’s purpose, regardless of the use. If you have questions or an idea you would like to discuss, please call (415) 433-6859, ext. 15, or e-mail us. The options below may be combined to accomplish your charitable goals.

Unrestricted Funds | Donor Designated Beneficiary Funds
Donor Advised Funds | Asian Pacific Fund General Endowment
Asian Pacific Fund Programs | Scholarship Funds

Unrestricted Funds

Unrestricted funds support our annual campaign, which provides grants and services to Asian community organizations throughout the Bay Area. The grants address a current, specific need that often has not received mainstream attention. The services are generally to strengthen the financial stability of community agencies. The Asian Pacific Fund closely monitors unmet and emerging needs in the community and makes grants every year to affiliate agencies.

The focal point of the annual campaign changes each year so that we can continue to raise awareness about key issues and contribute across a broad range of needs. Agencies send program descriptions and budget information to request a grant, and we recruit experts who are knowledgeable about Asian American community programs to help us select the best programs to support. Contributions to the annual campaign are pooled to support programs that benefit a diversity of Asian communities throughout the Bay Area. To learn more about our work, please read about our past annual campaigns.

Restricted Funds

Some donors want to support a specific ethnic community, project or purpose, and we offer many options.

Donor Designated Beneficiary Funds

Some people want to support a favorite charity or a few favorite charities but they would like the gifts administered by a third party for added oversight and sometimes to protect the privacy of the donor. The Asian Pacific Fund can help you set up a designated beneficiary fund in which you ask us to disburse a set amount to your favorite charity (or charities). If, especially for tax purposes, you would like to contribute a larger amount or asset, we can distribute the funds over period of time. Any funds that we are holding are pooled with our long-term investments to achieve greater gains. This type of fund can be set up with many kinds of assets, such as cash, securities or bonds, annuities, and real estate, and the fund can be endowed so your favorite programs can count on support on a permanent basis.

Donor Advised Funds

A donor advised fund offers the donor an opportunity to make charitable contribution(s) when the timing is right (often for tax purposes) and to retain advisory privileges regarding the beneficiary organizations. This also means tax documentation is greatly simplified.

With this flexible method, the donor uses the services of the Asian Pacific Fund to benefit many other charities and causes. If asked, the Fund can provide guidance about needs in the Asian community and specific organizations that serve the people you want to help. At the same time, the donor may also recommend grants. Unlike our annual campaign which is dedicated to Bay Area Asian organizations, donors who give through donor advised funds often want to support an alma mater or an organization that has a special importance to family, including organizations that do not serve Asians. Through a donor advised fund you can also avoid the expense and administrative burden of establishing a private foundation.

General Endowment

All endowed funds are subject to spending restrictions to ensure that the Asian Pacific Fund can help the needy and serve community organizations and donors well into the future. We have been adding to the endowment since 2005 so the Fund can be a permanent resource that provides expert advice, valued services and grants for programs that have lasting impact. Our endowment portfolio is professionally managed and the Finance Committee of our Board of Directors provides oversight for investments.

By supporting the expansion of Asian philanthropy, the Fund is creating a long-term benefit to Asian American community. Donors honor the struggles of their ancestors, pay respect to their heritage, and build a legacy of Asian Americans supporting one another and those in need. In this way, everyone can all take part in building a stronger and better Asian American community.

Asian Pacific Fund Programs of Special Interest

Giving to a specific Asian Pacific Fund initiative allows donors to sustain the impact of existing programs. These programs range from Growing Up Asian in America, a heritage program for Bay Area youth, to the Chang-Lin Tien Awards program that supports the recognition and advancement of Asian Americans as leaders of U.S. colleges and universities.

Scholarship Funds

Donors who are especially interested in education can create a customized scholarship program. The Fund works with donors and educators to develop programs that reflect specific charitable goals and preferences. Some donors have chosen to support young people who are pursuing certain careers, who are from a specific ethnic background, or who have been shaped by particular life circumstances, such as been the first person in the family to attend college.

We also award scholarships through a general education fund that pools the contributions of many donors to help deserving students cover rising tuition costs.
