Recent Grants

The Asian Pacific Fund makes grants with resources from an annual campaign. In addition, donors are increasingly asking the Fund to provide advice and to solicit and review proposals in specific program areas or ethnic communities that are donor priorities.

2011-2012 Grants

Supporting Our Youth

We reached out to some of our affiliate organizations earlier this year to hear what their greatest needs are right now. Though these organizations work in many areas of service, we found that underserved youth in the Bay Area face some of the most pressing needs. This year's grants focus on projects that support the growth, security and well-being of our youth.

Grants are made through a competitive process. Thank you to our volunteer grants committee members in 2012:  Lisa Kang, Director of Grants Administration, California HealthCare Foundation; Nicole Kyauk, Associate Program Officer, East Bay Community Foundation; Stacie Ma’a, Vice President, Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation; The committee recommendations were reviewed and approved by the Asian Pacific Fund Board of Directors.

2010-2011 Grants

Newer Asian Immigrants and Emerging Problems

2011 grants supported by the annual campaign focused on newer Asian immigrants and emerging problems.  Many agencies requested assistance for working with Burmese, Mongolian, Himalayan, and Cambodian populations, who often have poverty rates that exceed 50%.

2009-2010 Grants

Safeguarding Vital Services for the Community During Budget Cuts

Many agencies have experienced budget cuts from government funding at the state and local level, half of our affiliate agencies expect a drop in funding. At the same time, agencies are reporting that the need for their services has increased. We know that some safety net services are in demand because of economic conditions. This year, we gave grants to fill the funding gaps for vital programs such as those serving disadvantaged youth and victims of domestic violence. We distributed 30 grants to agencies serving all the Asian ethnic groups throughout the Bay Area.

2008-2009 Grants

Grants Cushion the Impact of the Economic Downturn

California has been one of the states hardest hit by the economic downturn, and Asian communities have suffered enormously. More than 400,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders filed for unemployment insurance in the first quarter of 2009 alone, and we are the only major racial group for whom the number of initial unemployment insurance claims has increased every single quarter from Jaunary 2008 through March 2009. Asians also suffered the sharpest drop in homeownership last year, according to the U.S. Census, greater than of whites, blacks or Latinos.

2007-2008 Grants

Health Education on Childhood Obesity in Asian Communities

Childhood obesity has been a growing problem in the U.S., even for Asian communities. The percentage of Asian American kids in California who are at risk of becoming overweight has risen faster over the past 10 years than for any other ethnic group. This means that early intervention and health education are important, since being overweight puts people at risk for many health problems, like diabetes and asthma.
