Protecting Your Family From Earthquakes --
The Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety

The Asian Pacific Fund encourages Bay Area residents to learn easy ways to protect their families in an earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that there is a 63 percent chance there will be a strong, damaging Bay Area earthquake in the next 30 years. Preparing for earthquakes now is crucial because earthquakes can occur at any time, and many Asians are especially vulnerable in a disaster because they are not comfortable reading or speaking English.

The U.S. Geological Survey, California Earthquake Authority, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the American Red Cross and other agencies worked with the Asian Pacific Fund to translate and publish a multilingual earthquake preparedness booklet. This free manual has important information in simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and English, and was written especially for those who do not speak English as their primary language and for low-income families. This book contains advice for all Asians, including the Filipino, Indian and Japanese communities, and explains what to do during and after an earthquake to reduce risk of death or serious injury.

The booklets were inserted into 22 ethnic newspapers and are also available for free at 99 Ranch Markets and home improvement stores like Ace Hardware, The Home Depot and Orchard Supply Hardware. You may also request free paper copies from the U.S. Geological Survey or download a digital version.
