Healing the Spirit: Treatment of Depression Among the Asian Elderly

Elderly Asian women have the highest suicide rate of any racial or ethnic sub-group in the United States. A major cause of this is depression. The Asian Pacific Fund collaborated with several Asian community agencies to produce this health education tool to bring more attention to this subject. Healing the Spirit: Treatment of Depression Among the Asian Elderly portrays depression in a culturally-relevant way so elderly Asians and their family members and caregivers can learn about the symptoms of depression, its effects and how treatment can help.

This film was produced in partnership with AARP and the Stanford Geriatric Education Center. The film features interviews with writer Amy Tan, and Chinese, Filipino and Japanese families. This video is available in nine languages: Cantonese, English, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Mandarin, Tagalog and Vietnamese.

Videos have been distributed to public libraries and community-based organizations in metropolitan New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area. We also plan to distribute to all Geriatric Education Centers, Area Agencies on Aging and regional offices of AARP. Social service agencies and community and health-related organizations may request free copies by contacting the Asian Pacific Fund or by downloading this order form. Send the completed form to our office at 225 Bush Street, Suite 590, San Francisco, CA 94104, or e-mail it to video@asianpacificfund.org. A user's guide is available to help facilitate discussion after viewing the film.
